Submitting to the Folio & Getting Published
Q: Who can submit to the Folio?
A: Any current Conestoga student is welcome to submit!
Q: How do I get published in the Folio?
A: If you are a Conestoga student, just go ahead and submit! If your work is qualified, it will go on to copy editing, where you can put any finishing touches on your work before it is finally published in the newest issue of the Folio.
Q: Where do I submit my work to the Folio?
A: You can submit lit and art here.
Q: When do submissions close?
A: As with issue release dates, submission deadlines will vary by year. The current deadline for the winter issue is November 10th, 2023.
Q: How do I know if my piece has been critiqued or not?
A: You can find the status of lit critiques here and the status of art critiques here. They are also linked in the Submit page.
Q: My piece was rejected. What do I do?
A: It's OK if your piece was rejected this time around - it's not personal, we promise. We recommend that you review our critique notes on your piece in the Submit page and resubmit.
Q: Can I resubmit?
A: As we like to say at the Folio, RiSE: Resubmission is Strongly Encouraged. You are more than welcome to resubmit your work, regardless of its status!
Q: What kind of work does the Folio accept?
A: The Folio accepts all kinds of work - songs, poems, prose, screenplays, and art of all mediums. However, we cannot accept fanfiction, fanart, or otherwise unoriginal works. Ultimately, the rights to fanworks belong to people and entities other than the submitter, and we therefore cannot publish it.
Q: How does critiquing work?
A: Three out of the six cycle days, the staff of the Folio meet to critique either lit or art, supervised by our lit and art editors respectively. We review each piece, discuss within small groups for a short time, then move to a larger discussion, and then vote on whether the piece should be qualified or not.
Q: What are copy edits?
A: Copy editing happens after a lit piece is qualified and are meant to ensure that your best work is published in our magazine.
Q: How does copy editing work?
A: A copy editor reviews your work for spelling, grammar, and minor stylistic errors. The copy-edited work is then sent back so you can either approve or reject these edits and/or make their own final touch-ups to the piece.
Q: What are featured pieces?
A: Featured pieces are selected from the month's qualified pieces and voted on by our staff. They are showcased on our website and Instagram page.
